The motorway service station Bodensee (also Raststätte Hörbranz or Raststation Bodensee Hörbranz ) is located in the state of Vorarlberg in Austria on the Rhine Valley motorway A14 ( E43 / E60 ) and goes directly into the German federal motorway 96 on the German-Austrian border near Hörbranz.

It is the only motorway rest stop with dendriform white columns and capitals . These dominate the whole construction.

history

The motorway customs offices, including parking and control areas, set up in the municipality of Hörbranz on the southwest and northeast side of the Rheintalautobahn A14 in the early 1970s became obsolete when border controls to Austria were abolished on December 1, 1997. Since 1997 investigations have been carried out into the subsequent use of the former customs office area. The construction of an industrial park by Rhomberg Bau GmbH was planned on the site at the beginning of the 2000s ; a corresponding agreement with ASFINAG was terminated by mutual consent in August 2009 because no solution could be found for the junction and the connection to the road network . In 2012, ASFINAG was considering a truck parking space as an alternative to the service area.

On December 9, 2009, the local council of Hörbranz passed the decision in principle for a dedication procedure for the construction of a motorway service station. Commissioning was expected in mid-2012. At the beginning of 2010, ASFINAG issued a tender for the subsequent use of the former border customs office as a rest stop. The consortium around the Vorarlberger Rhomberg Group was awarded the contract in June 2010. Planning began in July 2010.

Residents and other critics have long resisted the subsequent use and in particular the originally planned construction of the rest stop, primarily because of the feared noise and unnecessary use of space. A Lindau citizens' initiative had also petitioned the Bavarian state parliament because of the feared increase in traffic, noise and emissions . Against the reassignment decision of the municipality Hörbranz also laid the country's Ombudswoman , Gabriele Strele, the Constitutional Court is successful (Constitutional Court) complaint. In a referendum , around 74 percent of the citizens eligible to vote spoke out in favor of the rest stop in Hörbranz, despite the concerns.

My Stop A4 AG, which was intended to operate the shop and restaurant, withdrew from the project in 2013.

In February 2014, the necessary procedures regarding building law, trade law, water law, forest law, nature and landscape protection began by the district administration in Bregenz.

After the rejection of all complaints by the Vorarlberg Regional Administrative Court and the Administrative Court against the project and a confirmation of the land use plan by the Constitutional Court, the first construction work (demolition of the Autobahn 2 building ) for the realization of the project began in November 2016 and construction work began in February 2017.

The Bodensee Hörbranz rest stop was officially opened on July 3, 2018.

Location and operation

The rest station is located directly on the A14 motorway, southwest of the motorway, completely in the Hörbranz municipality at around 408  m above sea level. A. The federal border with Germany is about 50 meters away (start of the exit). The motorway service station is about 1500 meters as the crow flies from the center of the municipality of Hörbranz, about 700 meters from Lindau-Zech and about 4000 meters from Lindau (Insel) .

The underpass between the northeast and southwest parts

The Mühlbach, which runs roughly from north to south in this area and flows into Lake Constance, runs below the rest stop and the motorway.

The motorway rest stop is the only one in Vorarlberg that connects directly to the German border and it is only a little above the lowest point in the country ( Lake Constance 395  m above sea level ). The service station can be reached directly from the German Autobahn 96 . From the direction of travel from Bregenz to the German federal border, there is an access for cars and an underground path connection for pedestrians.

The service station in the south-west is open 24 hours a day, is largely handicapped accessible and suitable for car and truck traffic. A direct view of the Pfänder ( 1062  m above sea level ) is possible from the rest station .

The rest station is operated by Raststation Bodensee Hörbranz GmbH. It is a collaboration between one company each from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Real estate, architecture, trivia

The property is owned by ASFINAG, which has granted the Raststation Bodensee Hörbranz GmbH building rights for a period of 30 years.

Rest stop

The operators see the style of the motorway service station in the southwest as an homage to Vorarlberg's architectural tradition and as a showcase project for the careful use of resources. The main idea behind the construction of the service station is to create a sustainably managed service station.

Shop and terrace

The concrete structure, which is visible from afar and dominates the property, consists of a slim, approximately 120 meter long, white roof structure ( flight roof ) with 3861 m², which is supported by 33 (11 × 3) dendrite-shaped white columns made of reinforced concrete . The 7.28 meter high columns are conical in shape and thicken from 42 centimeters at the base to 68 centimeters at the capital. An unadorned capital with a diameter of 3.30 meters is placed seamlessly on each of the columns . This construction is supposed to represent a huge table.

Below this roof is a kidney-shaped steel-wood construction ( plum ) with reinforced concrete ceilings, in which the restaurant with terrace is located at ground level, as well as the petrol pumps for the petrol station. The toilet facilities are located in the basement. Wherever possible, sustainable building materials were used for the construction of the building at the newly built rest stop. The restaurant was designed with 250 seats indoors and a further 120 seats are provided on the terrace. About 80 people are employed.

An underground connection leads through the newly designed connecting corridor that has existed since the 1970s to the northeastern part. This underpass is very dominantly equipped with several video surveillance cameras in dome design.

An existing building of the customs administration, Autobahn 4 , has been preserved.

Truck gas station on the northeastern part

North-eastern part and customs building

The existing buildings of the customs administration in the northeast have also been preserved and are long-term leased to German customs. A parking space for large and heavy transports and special transports was also left. The A14 fuel pumps for trucks were newly built on this side under a smaller white canopy on the south-west side and only with four conical columns and capitals.

An important ASFINAG toll control point is also located in this north-eastern section.

Electric charging stations at the Lake Constance service station

Trivia

At the rest stop there are e-charging stations from the Vorarlberger Kraftwerke ( Vlotte ) and an ultra-fast charger . This 150- kilowatt - e-charging station is the first in Austria.
