The streets on the square were named as
- At the border poplar after a poplar that stood on the border between Prussia and Bremen,

- Westerholzstrasse to a western oak forest ( wood ), from which the wood for the beams in the Bremen town hall came in 1405/10 ,

history
Due to a railway line and the accession of the Kingdom of Hanover to the German Customs Union in 1854, industrialization began in Hemelingen, which has increased significantly since 1888 after Bremen joined the Customs Union. In 1902 a market place was created. The town hall was built in 1906 and was expanded around 1926. Until 1935 the place was used for fairs, festivals and sporting events. During the Nazi era , the square was called Adolf-Hitler-Platz for a few years (see list ).
