The Ratzenberg near Lauenstein ( Ludwigsstadt ) is 678  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Franconian Forest and has always been the border region between the Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria and the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt , Thuringia ( Germany ).

Geography and geology

The Ratzenberg is located in the immediate vicinity of the municipalities of Probstzella (NE), Graefenthal (NW), Lichtenhain (SW) and Lauenstein (Ludwigstadt) (SO) in the Franconian Forest Nature Park, right on the border with the Thuringian Forest Nature Park . It is also considered the northernmost mountain in Bavaria and became famous for the Thüringer Warte observation tower . The first tower at this point was donated by the Thuringian industrial pioneer Franz Itting and also bore his name. The hill-like mountain top is overgrown with isolated conifers.
