Raúl Contreras

Raúl Contreras (born May 3, 1896 in Cojutepeque , † December 2, 1973 in Madrid ) was a Salvadoran poet , playwright and diplomat .

Life

Contreras served in several diplomatic positions as envoy extraordinary and ambassador to the government of El Salvador in Madrid and Paris in the 20th century . In 1920 he began his diplomatic career as ambassador in Madrid. During the Second World War he lived with his family in the south of France.

Between 1947 and 1950 he also wrote his poems under the female pseudonym Lydia Nogales , which were published in El Salvador by the publishing magazines La patria de las artes and Tribuna Libre in San Salvador . Together with Alberto Guerra Trigueros he founded La Casa de Cultura de San Salvador (House of Culture in San Salvador). From 1949 to 1959 he was president of the Junta Nacional de Turismo and was involved in the establishment of significant tourist centers and parks. In November 1973 Raúl Contreras was awarded the highest order Nacional José Matías Delgado (Gran Cruz, Placa de Plata República de El Salvador).

After his death in 1973, his remains were transferred to El Salvador and buried in the Los chorros (Parque acuático) in the Jardín de los Poetas, which was built for him on account of his honor . His literary works are now in the El Salvador National Library .
