Raul Maravilla Gonzalez (born December 3, 1930 in La Carlota City , Negros Occidental Province, † September 7, 2014 ) was a Filipino politician .

biography

His father Delfin Gonzalez was temporarily mayor (Mayor) of Jaro , which in 1937 became a district of the newly created city of Iloilo City .

After attending the Jaro Elementary School and Panay College , he studied political science at the Colegio de San Agustin between 1947 and 1951 ; he completed his studies with a Bachelor of Arts (AB) in Political Science. He then completed postgraduate studies in law at the University of Santo Tomas , which he completed in 1955 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).

He then worked as a lawyer before moving to the civil service in 1960 as a legal assistant in the office of the governor of the province of Iloilo . In 1961 he was legal assistant in the office of the mayor of Manila and then from 1,963 to 1,969 employees of censorship for movies (Board of Censors for Motion Pictures). From 1970 until the imposition of martial law by President Marcos and the subsequent dissolution of the House of Representatives in 1972, he was legal advisor to the Parliament's Education Committee.

He then took a position as a lecturer at Assumption College and College of the Holy Spirit at Philippine Normal University . He was later appointed professor of commercial law at the University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University . He also worked as a lawyer again and as such was President of the Bar Association (Integrated Bar of the Philippines) between 1979 and 1981.

After the fall of the Marcos government, he was ombudsman (Tanodbayan) from 1986 to 1988 during the tenure of President Aquino .

He then resumed his work as a lawyer and university lecturer. During this time he was also active in other professional and socio-political organizations and, among other things, Vice-President of the Foundation of Former Law Students of the University of Santo Tomas (University of Sto. Tomas Law Alumni Foundation Inc.), President of a landowners association (Valle Verde 6 Homeowners Association ), auditors of the guild of Catholic Lawyers (Catholic Lawyers guild of the Philippines), President of the Manila Mahamilad Lions Club , chairman of the Philippine Committee of Lawyers for human rights (Lawyers Committee on human rights - New York), President of the Asian Bar association (All Asia Bar Association), Governor of the Citizens Legal Aid Society of the Philippines, President of the National Bar Association of the Philippines and in several other leadership roles in the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.

Between 1995 and 2004, Gonzalez was a member of the House of Representatives (Kapulungán ng mgá Kinatawán ng Pilipinas or Mababang Kapulungan ng Kongreso) for three consecutive terms and represented the only electoral district (Lone District) of the Iloilo Province.

On 18 August 2004 he was selected by President Arroyo to the justice minister (Secretary of Justice) in the Cabinet appointed. As part of a government reshuffle, he became Chief of Presidential Staff in 2009, making him one of the President's closest collaborators.
