Raumati South is a town in the Kapiti Coast District of Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand .

The city is closely interwoven with Raumati Beach, which is adjacent to the north, and since both places have grown together over the years, they look like one city today. However, they are still listed separately on maps.

Origin of name

In the Māori language , raumati means “summer”.

Raumati South is located around 3 km southwest of the city center of Paraparaumu and directly adjacent to Raumati Beach to the north . Together with Paraparaumu , Paraparaumu Beach , Otaihanga , Waikanae and Waikanae Beach , the two cities on the Kapiti Coast form a settlement center with a combined population of over 37,000, around 76% of the district's total population.

The city, which has an area of ​​565 hectares, can be reached via the New Zealand State Highway 1 , which runs east of the settlement area and connects Raumati South with Porirua in the south and Wellington further south.

To the south of the city borders the 12 km² Queen Elizabeth Park , behind it the village of Paekakariki .

As in the entire Kapit Coast region, Raumati South experiences a water shortage during the summer months due to the drought .

history

The place was created in 1920 by entrepreneurs as a resort.

population

In the 2013 census, the city had 1,401 inhabited houses with a total of 3,594 inhabitants, 1.4% more than in the 2006 census.

Attractions

  • The Queen Elizabeth Park was filming for the movie The Lord of the Rings known. In the film, the park was used to depict Pelennor , a plain of fertile farmland on which a battle was taking place.
  • Raumati South is known for its art-oriented lifestyle.

Education

With the Raumati South School, the city ​​has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2016, 465 students attended the school. In addition to it, there is also a Waldorf school in the city, called Te Ra by the New Zealanders , which is a rare specialty in New Zealand.

Sports

The Kapiti Bears , the Kapiti Coast Rugby League Club founded in 1970 , is located at Matthews Park on the outskirts of Raumati Beach .

In 2009, the Kapiti Coast Region Council decided, against the will of the majority of residents, the controversial project of relocating and simultaneously widening the New Zealand State Highway 1 through Raumati and further north through Paraparaumu and Waikanae .
