Raymond Peter Hillinger

Raymond Peter Hillinger (born May 2, 1904 in Chicago , Illinois , United States , † November 13, 1971 ) was an American clergyman, Roman Catholic bishop of Rockford and later auxiliary bishop in Chicago .

Life

Raymond Peter Hillinger first visited the Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and then the seminary of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein . The Archbishop of Chicago , George William Cardinal Mundelein , ordained him on April 2, 1932 .

After three years as a chaplain in Chicago, the gifted preacher became a member of the diocesan mission team in 1935. After 15 years as a minister for popular missions , he became rector of the Guardian Angel Orphanage in Chicago in 1950.

On November 3, 1953, Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Rockford . The Archbishop of Chicago, Samuel Cardinal Stritch , ordained him episcopal on December 29 of that year . Co- consecrators were Martin Dewey McNamara , Bishop of Joliet, Illinois , and William Aloysius O'Connor , Bishop of Springfield, Illinois . The inauguration at Rockford Cathedral took place on January 14, 1954.

Hilinger's health deteriorated so much that he had to be represented by other bishops in 1955 and 1956 at the celebration of the Triduum Sacrum and the ordination of priests. From November 1955, Vicar General Andrew J. Burns administered the diocese as Apostolic Administrator sede plena . On June 27, 1956, the Pope accepted his resignation from the Rockford diocese and appointed him titular bishop of Derbe and auxiliary bishop in Chicago. Despite his persistently poor health, he attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. Until 1968 he was also active in pastoral care. He found his final resting place in the All Saints cemetery in Des Plaines .
