Raymund Bad
Raymund Schlecht (born March 11, 1811 in Eichstätt ; † March 24, 1891 ibid) was a German clergyman, teacher and music researcher .
education
After his school days in Eichstätt, Schlecht attended the grammar school in Neuburg an der Donau from 1826 , after which he moved to the Lyceum in Regensburg in 1829 . Here he studied mathematics and physics and, after starting his studies in theology, mainly oriental languages. In 1833 he entered the seminary in Eichstätt and was ordained a priest here on August 28, 1834 .
Act
After only a short pastoral activity as the local chaplain of the pastor of Pollenfeld , he was appointed prefect and first teacher of the newly founded school teachers' seminar for the Upper Palatinate in Eichstätt in 1836 and its director with the title "Inspector" in 1838. He worked here until his retirement in 1868. In 1846 he founded his own seminary school to give prospective teachers the opportunity to practice teaching.
After his retirement, Schlecht undertook extensive research in the field of musicology and liturgy . In particular, he devoted himself to restoring the original ways of singing Gregorian chant , which was only preserved in a severely mutilated form in the Editio Medicaea, which was officially introduced for the Catholic Church at the time .
For this purpose, Raymund Schlecht suggested in 1872 the establishment of an association "to research old choral manuscripts for the purpose of restoring the Cantus S. Gregorii" by the cathedral music director Michael Hermesdorff from Trier . The most important European choral researchers such as Dom Joseph Pothier from the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes , P. Anselm Schubiger from the Abbey of Einsiedeln , P. Ambrosius Kienle , Abbé Jules Bonhomme , François-Auguste Gevaert , Théodore Nisard , P . Hugo Gaisser from the Maredsous Abbey , Peter Piel , Peter Bohn , Henry Böckeler , Heinrich Oberhoffer , Robert Eitner , but also prominent instrumental virtuosos such as Jacques-Nicolas Lemmens at. The research results of the association were discussed in the magazine "Cäcilia" published by Hermesdorff in the form of handwritten synopses of the comparative materials sent in by the association members and finally led to the edition of the Graduale ad normam cantus S. Gregorii Michael Hermesdorff from 1876 onwards.
Raymund Schlecht contributed to the technical discussions in this journal, among other things, a table of neumes, treatises on the meaning of neumes , the rhythm of the Gregorian chant and the character of the chorale keys, arranged the chants using historical tonariums and translated and commented on various medieval treatises on music theory issues.
In addition to his musicological activity, he mainly devoted himself to training teachers in church music.
