RebellComedy is a German stand-up comedy ensemble. It was founded in 2007 by Usama Elyas and Babak Ghassim in Aachen . All artists in the group have a migration background , which is part of their performances, but according to their own statements is not their central component.

history

Before RebellComedy, Usama Elyas and Babak Ghassim had a company to make short films. Usama developed the first concept for the show for his diploma thesis. His professor at the time gave the concept little chance of success. Nevertheless, the two continued to play with the idea of setting up their own comedy ensemble, as they felt that they and their surroundings were not represented in the comedy scene of that time. In 2007 this finally resulted in RebellComedy. The first comrades-in-arms were sought through a call on Facebook. The model was American stand-up comedy shows, but also artists such as Cem Yılmaz .

Initially, RebellComedy only appeared semi-professionally on small stages, but the group quickly succeeded in addressing the group of young people with a migration background, which until then was difficult to reach for cultural offers, who did not feel represented by artists such as Kaya Yanar , Bülent Ceylan or Fatih Çevikkollu . They now fill the large halls of the respective cities on up to two tours a year.

Since most of the artists are of Muslim faith, there are no alcohol or tobacco advertising on the tours. But the aim is also to encourage young Muslims in particular to think and to deal with supposedly indispensable beliefs. In addition, radical religious positions should be deliberately exposed to ridicule.

criticism

On March 7, 2019, two members of the groups performed at a one-hour event in front of 140 prisoners from the Bochum prison . On March 18, 2019, the federal government of prison staff criticized the appearance on its website, as it had cost 6,000 euros, according to its information, which was "far too much" and corresponds to 42.85 euros per person. In similar cases, artists would only be paid an expense allowance. After the Kölner Stadtanzeiger took up the incident, the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Justice requested a report from the head of the Bochum prison. A Justice Department spokesman described the amount paid as "quite high and inadequate". The group had previously performed in the Castrop-Rauxel JVA and the JVA Geldern .
