Red is the third studio album by the New Zealand alternative metal band Devilskin . It was released via Rodeostar on April 3, 2020.

Emergence

The album was written in 2018. The four musicians mostly withdrew on weekends so that they could work in peace. Overall, the band took a lot of time with the songwriting and ended up recording 30 songs as demos . Below that is the song Be Like the River , which is curiously the title of the previous album . The first song on the album Do You See Birds was the last and almost didn't end up on the album. In the autumn of the same year Devilskin played a European tour in support of Halestorm as well as their own headlining tour through the United Kingdom , during which some songs from the new album were played.

After that, in mid-2019, recordings began at Roundhead Studios in Auckland . The album was produced by Greg Haver, while Simon Gooding worked as a sound engineer and mixed the album . With Be Like the River , the album Red contains a song that has the same title as the previous album . According to Tony Martin, it was originally written for the previous album but didn't make it onto the final track list. The album Be Like the River already contained a track called We Rise , the title of the debut album . For the songs Endo , All Fall Down and Corrode were music videos rotated.

The album title stands for the color red , which according to the band is the universal color of passion , vitality , blood , danger , anger , horror and love . Of all colors, red would be a warning and a statement. According to Paul Martin, the band wants to reflect the diversity, strength and depth of the songs with an undeniable declaration. The song Do You See Birds is about a person who is under house arrest . She looks out the window and looks at the freedom she cannot achieve. Corrode describes the journeys and challenges a person has to face when he feels lost. Paul Martin wants to express with the song that it is okay to ask for help to solve one's problems.

In the first single Endo , singer Jennie Skullander processed her endometriosis disease , because of which she had to undergo an operation. A 11 cm long cyst was removed from her ovary . She herself referred to the song as a " catharian exorcism ". The Victor deals with a serious car accident in which two children were thrown more than 50 meters out of the car. The band happened to be the first to come to the scene of the accident and helped the casualties, who, according to Tony Martin, all survived the accident. Sweet Release is about a 21-year-old man who was treated in a mental hospital and was under surveillance for the risk of suicide . One day he managed to leave the facility unaccompanied and drowned himself in the Waikato River .

reception

Gareth Williams of Australian online magazine Wall of Sound wrote that the album has "brutal growls , Iron Maiden- like bass lines, a thundering fat drum sound and enough shredding guitars to make any heavy music fan happy". Williams awarded nine out of ten points. On the other hand, Matthias Weckmann from the German magazine Metal Hammer praised Skullander's vocal performance, but criticized the fact that the band "lets the album start with the worst song" and "does not exhaust its full potential". Weckmann awarded four out of seven points.

After the first two Devilskin albums each reached number one in the New Zealand album charts, Red rose to number eight. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the release of physical sound carriers had to be postponed to May 1, 2020. This made the album number two.
