In 1992 the concept album , conceived and written by WASP founder Blackie Lawless , was published, with which he told the story and fate of the teenage boy Jonathan Steele he had invented. Unloved by his parents, the boy leaves home to become a famous rock star. He achieves this goal, but does not succeed in gaining the love and acceptance of his parents, which is his real pursuit. The story ends with the suicide of the protagonists . The album, originally comprising ten songs, received positive reviews from contemporary metal magazines in Germany. The Crimson Idol belongs "without a doubt to those discs that you can put in the corner with the classic albums with a clear conscience", wrote Rock Hard , for example . It is "all in all" about "a complete album without failures," not always "on world-class level, but damn close".

In July 1992, The Crimson Idol was album of the month in Metal Hammer , and Martin Groß wrote that, musically, Lawless adheres to "classic patterns" of what Heavy Metal is "extremely worthy of being baptized". "Flawless and very well done" were "stringed together convincing songs".

The album was not particularly successful commercially, especially in the US. So it completely missed the chart entry in the home country of the band, while in Europe (including in Germany, Austria and Switzerland) it was at least one of the top 40 albums on the music charts. The published singles only got into the hit lists in Great Britain .

In promoting the album, Blackie Lawless said he completed over 800 interviews during a three-month press tour.

As early as 1992, film material had been produced in order to be able to represent the story visually, but the planned film was not completed. On the occasion of the 25th album anniversary, Lawless set about finishing the film. The production cost for this was 500,000 US dollars (approximately 449,000 euros ), the labor time was 1.5 years. Five people worked on the completion of the film, which was coordinated by Lawless.

During this time he worked with his band on a new recording of the album, because they were not allowed to use the original recordings due to their affiliation with a different record company ( Napalm Records ) than 1992 ( EMI Group ) ("Due to copyright issues all songs for" Reidolized (The Soundtrack To The Crimson Idol) "had to be re-recorded.").

The original compilation of the album was expanded by four new songs, which existed in demo form in 1992 , but had not been completed due to the time pressure imposed by the record company. The title Miss You was actually the first song that Lawless wrote for The Crimson Idol in 1992 and recorded as a demo. Lawless changed a few things for Reidolized and then recorded the song. When recording the vocal tracks, Lawless oriented himself towards the stage production. He said:

“The only thing that is different for me today is that I sing the vocals a little differently this time. I acted a bit more than on the original. Because I just had the feeling that I knew Jonathan better now. "

Press

The relevant rock magazines Metal Hammer , Rock Hard and Rocks , which are distributed in Germany , did not report on the album with their own articles, but only commented on its release in reviews . Only the German-language edition of Classic Rock published an interview with Blackie Lawless, which was published in full on the magazine's website in September 2019.

Reviews

Metal Hammer awarded six points and judged that the band had succeeded in “condensing the storyline dramaturgy” with the newly inserted pieces. Among the four bonus tracks on the second CD, “the racy rocker” The Lost Boy and the “even better” The Peace would stand out. The latter could " pass as Lawless' Purple Rain ". However, "the DVD bonus" with the film material "multimedia added value" is missing - "the game sequences shot in 1992" have a rather low cinematic entertainment value.

Alexander Kolbe, on the other hand, wrote in Rocks that although the album was “not a one-to-one copy”, the album contained six additional pieces that were “originally intended for The Crimson Idol ”, but “not used ”. They added "nothing enlightening" to the Jonathan Steele story. “Sound and performance” “never came close to the originals”, and some things were “involuntarily funny:” The verbal profanity in Chainsaw Charlie was “replaced by new, similar-sounding word creations”.

In Rock Hard , Jens Peters wrote that WASP presented "an exciting re-imagination" of The Crimson Idol , which is "almost like a completely new work" not only because of the four additional tracks "but also" because of the sweeping soundscape " feel. He described the film accompanying the publication as a "chic strip". For WASP fans there is "no way around this publication."
