history

The Reiherstieg was built at the Reiherstieg shipyard under the direction of Joachim Eduard von Somm and was launched there in 1852 with construction number 5. The owner was the trading house Joh. Ces. Godeffroy & son of the Hamburg businessman Johan Cesar Godeffroy (1813–1885) . The sailing ship was named after the Reiherstieg , a branch of the Elbe on which the company's shipyard was located.

The brig transported in liner service mainly expatriates and trade goods from Hamburg to Australia and Chile . On a trip to Sydney in 1852, the later famous researcher Georg Neumayer went on the Reiherstieg . After completing his studies at the navigation school in Hamburg, he signed on as a seaman under Captain Sparbohm. When almost the entire crew of the ship deserted in Sydney to look for gold in Australia, Neumayer initially stayed on board. He then duly inspected Melbourne and went to the gold fields. In 1868 the brig was sold to Drøbak in Norway and now operated under the name Hilda .
