Reinaldo Correia Freitas Belo († 1984 in East Timor ), fighting name Kilik Wae Ga'e (Kilik Wae Gae) , was a commander of the Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste (FALINTIL), which fought against the Indonesian occupiers. He belonged to the Marxist-Leninist wing of FRETILIN .

Life

In early 1976, Belo was commander of the Forças Armadas de Libertação Nacional de Timor-Leste (FALINTIL) in the Baucau region . Later he was one of the commanders in the resistance base at Matebian . Disagreements between him and Commanders Sera Key weakened the defense. After the base was destroyed in 1978, he and Xanana Gusmão fought against the Indonesians in the Lautém region . In 1979, Belo was one of the five remaining military commanders who met with Gusmão and the four other political leaders in Titilari to reform the resistance. From 1 to March 8, 1981 took place on Mount Aitana ( subdistrict Lacluta Subdistrict a meeting held FRETILIN). Xanana Gusmão was elected as the new head of FALINTIL. Gusmão became the new commander of the FALINTIL. Belo was accepted as Chief of Staff and into the Central Committee of FRETILIN (CCF).

In 1984 Belo tried together with his deputy Mauk Moruk , his subordinate Oligari Asswain and another FALINTIL commander against Xanana Gusmão. Gusmão was accused of treason because he wanted to politically unite the various East Timorese forces against the Indonesians. Gusmão accused the group of a lack of sense of duty and military errors due to arbitrariness. At a reorganization meeting of FALINTIL in Liaruca in September 1984 called by Gusmão , the rebelling commanders did not appear. Instead, they tried to win over other commanders in Same . On September 4th a radical restructuring of the military command structure was decided in Liaruca. Belo and Mauk Moruk, along with three other men, were kicked out of the Central Committee for rioting. Gusmão now became FALINTIL's chief of staff as well as commander. Belo escaped capture but later shot himself, according to Gusmão. He later put Belo as having psychological problems. Other FALINTIL commanders claim that Belo was killed in a skirmish with the Indonesians. Gusmão used the crackdown on the attempted coup to throw the Marxist ideology of FRETILIN overboard in the resistance.

Others

Belo was married to the freedom fighter and later politician Ilda Maria da Conceição from 1977 .

In 2006, Belo was posthumously awarded the Ordem das Falintil and on May 20, 2019 by President Francisco Guterres the Ordem de Timor-Leste (collar).
