Reinhard Egger (born September 11, 1989 in Wörgl ) is an Austrian luge athlete and two-time Olympic athlete (2014, 2018).

Career

Reinhard Egger from Langkampfen started tobogganing as a student in 1996.

Since 2004 he started with David Schweiger in the doubles competition. In 2007 they won both the Tyrolean and Austrian championships. The team finished sixth at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Lake Placid .

Since 2007 Egger also drove in a single-seater. Here he came second in the Austrian championships in 2008, won the Tyrolean championship and was tenth in the Junior World Championships.

Since the 2008/09 season, Egger has only been sledding in a single-seater. In Igls he won his first junior world cup race and also the Austrian junior championship. He also celebrated his debut in the Luge World Cup at the start in Igls. He reached the 22nd place. This season he was 47th overall with just one use. At the first race of the 2009/10 season in Calgary , Egger achieved a first result in the top ten with sixth place.

In 2011 Egger finished eleventh at both the World Championships in Cesana and the European Championships in Sigulda . In the overall World Cup ranking, Egger took tenth place in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 . At the 2014 Winter Olympics , he finished eighth. In the 2017/2018 season , Egger indicated with a fourth place in Oberhof and an eighth place at Königssee that he could catch up with the world's best.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang , he finished 15th in the single-seater .

At the beginning of the 2018/19 season, Egger took third place in Lake Placid and Whistler and consolidated his position among the world's best. On January 6, 2019, Egger celebrated his first World Cup victory in Königssee . He benefited from the fact that due to heavy snowfall, the second run was canceled and only the first run was counted for the safety of the drivers. Thanks to the good results, he has also qualified for the Austrian team since 2017/18, placing third in Oberhof in 2017/18 and second in Königssee in 2018/19. At the 2019 Luge World Championship in Winterberg , Egger won the silver medal and was thus able to celebrate the greatest success of his career to date. In the World Cup, he continued to improve to sixth place.

Personal

Egger is a police officer in Tyrol by profession and is a member of the top sports squad of the Federal Ministry of the Interior . He lives with his partner in Langkampfen . In July 2018, he was surprised by the eruption of the Indonesian volcano Rinjani while on vacation , but was uninjured.
