Reinhard Meinel
Reinhard Meinel (born October 21, 1958 in Jena ) is a German physicist. He is the head of the Relativistic Astrophysics group at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Jena . He is internationally recognized as one of the leading experts in the analytical treatment of the theory of gravity . He is also one of the first to sign the appeal that led to the foundation of the New Forum .
Life
As a student, Reinhard Meinel took part in the International Physics Olympiads in Budapest and Hradec Králové in 1976 and 1977 and won a silver medal in 1976 and a gold medal in 1977. The GDR team at that time also included Ralf Glaser and Stefan Schuster (only 1977), who are also employed at the University of Jena today.
Reinhard Meinel studied physics at the University of Jena, graduated in 1981 and obtained his doctorate there in 1984 (doctoral supervisor: Gernot Neugebauer ). Since he did not conform to the policies of the GDR leadership, he was initially unable to pursue a university career. From 1984 to 1986 he worked at the Center for Research and Technology in Microelectronics (ZFTM) in Dresden (today Zentrum Mikroelektronik Dresden AG) and at the Central Institute for Nuclear Research Rossendorf (today Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf ). From 1986 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the Central Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam (today Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam ).
On 9/10 In September 1989 he took part in the founding of the citizens' movement Neues Forum in Grünheide near Berlin and was one of the first to sign the corresponding appeal. He was then very active in this civil movement. So he has u. a. edited a book with Thomas Wernicke about the activities of the state security in the Potsdam district. In Jena, together with Gerhard Kluge , he worked through the state security files at the University of Jena.
After German reunification, he was able to return to the University of Jena in 1991 and has been researching relativistic astrophysics there ever since. In 1999 he was appointed associate professor.
Scientific work
In 1995, together with Gernot Neugebauer, he published a strictly analytical solution to Einstein's field equations for a rigidly rotating dust disk.
He also researches nonlinear cosmic dynamos and other problems of general relativity, as well as solitons . He is the first author of the monograph Relativistic Figures of Equilibrium .
Meinel is also very involved in teaching and received the teaching award from the Physics and Astronomy Faculty in Jena for his lectures on Quantum Mechanics I (2007) as well as Quantum Mechanics II and Relativistic Physics (2010). He is the author of a textbook on the theory of relativity.
