Reinhard Player
Reinhard Spieler (* 1964 in Rotenburg an der Fulda ) is a German art historian and has been director of the Sprengel Museum in Hanover since 2014, succeeding Ulrich Krempel . Before that, he was director of the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen am Rhein since 2007 .
Life
Reinhard Spieler studied art history, classical archeology and modern German literature in Munich, Berlin and Paris and received his doctorate in 1997 from Uwe M. Schneede with a thesis on the triptychs by Max Beckmann . In 1997/98 he completed a scientific traineeship at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (Düsseldorf) and was employed there as a research assistant until 2000. In 2002 he moved to the Franz Gertsch Museum in Burgdorf near Bern, Switzerland , as founding director . In addition to a large Franz Gertsch retrospective, he organized exhibitions on Gerhard Richter and Lucio Fontana as well as numerous themed exhibitions. In 2007 he took over the management of the Wilhelm Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, which he reopened in 2009 after extensive renovation with the exhibition “alles” - a presentation of the entire collection with almost 10,000 works, displayed in a hanging place in Petersburg without any order .
In addition to his museum and exhibition activities, he has held teaching positions at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and at the Universities of Düsseldorf, Bern and Heidelberg. His interests and research focuses on the one hand on Classical Modernism and, above all , on Max Beckmann , about whom he has written numerous books and texts - for example, “Max Beckmann. Imagery and worldview in the triptychs ”, 1998 and“ Max Beckmann. Der Weg zum Mythos ”, 1994 - on the other hand, contemporary art in all media and forms.
Reinhard Spieler has been a member of the board of the German Museum Association since May 2018 , where he represents the interests of art museums in Germany.
