Armin Second

Armin Second (born May 14, 1941 in Ellerwalde , West Prussia ) is a German art historian and was museum director .

Armin Second grew up in Flensburg and graduated from high school there in 1960. He studied German, history and philosophy in Kiel, Tübingen and Göttingen and from 1963 art history . 1967/68 completed a research stay in Antwerp and Brussels. Second came in 1970 with the study “Studies on Marten de Vos (1532–1603). A Contribution to the History of Antwerp Painting in the Second Half of the 16th Century ”in Göttingen (published as a book in 1980). In 1970/71 he was a visiting scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. On the occasion of the Olympic Games, from October 1971 to May 1972, Zwei worked on the exhibition Bavaria - Art and Culture in the Munich City Museum, organized by Michael Petzet . In the summer of 1972 he stayed in Paris for a research stay. From September 1st 1972 on, he worked as a curator at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus , Munich. From 1974 to 1990 he was director there.

During this time he overcame the clause that had been in effect since the museum was founded in 1925, namely that the collection should be geared exclusively towards Munich artists, with new acquisitions being restricted to sketches and secondary material. Major works by the Munich artists were reserved for the Neue Pinakothek. A donation by Gabriele Münter in 1957, which included many works by Wassily Kandinsky and the group Der Blaue Reiter , made this regulation obsolete anyway. The collection has been expanded with other outstanding works by various artists (including Paul Klee , Franz Marc , Alexej von Jawlensky ). The artificial structure was managed with the architect Uwe Kiessler until the execution plans were completed (opening in 1994). In 1977 Armin became Second Commissioner of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Biennale des Jeunes in Paris. 1983, 1985, 1987 he was commissioner of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Biennale in São Paulo (1983: the “James Bay Project - A River drowned by Water” by Rainer Wittenborn and Claus Biegert , groups of works by Markus Lüpertz , and AR Penck ; 1985: Works by Peter Bömmels , Albert Hien and Jiří Georg Dokoupil ; 1987: works by Anselm Kiefer ).

From October 1, 1990 to December 31, 2007, he was the second director of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. The extension was planned and started during his tenure (opening in 2010). This enabled a further 1800 m² of exhibition space to be created. In addition, the Ständehaus (K21) could be acquired as a further exhibition space (opening 2002). This gave the art collection a space of another 5000 m².

From January 1, 2008 to October 31, 2013, he was the director of the Brandhorst Collection in Munich and the managing director of the Udo and Anette Brandhorst Foundation. As chairman of the foundation he was a. a. played a key role in acquiring new works by the artists Cy Twombly , Ed Ruscha , Alex Katz , Andy Warhol , Anri Sala , Simon Gimoprez , Mike Kelley and Isaac Julien .

Second wrote books on contemporary art and contributed to over 70 art catalogs and exhibitions.

He is a full member of the visual arts department of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts .

Private life

Armin Second has been married to Monika Steinhauser, who was a professor at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1992 to 2006, since 1974.
