Reinhold Fellenberg (born June 20, 1848 in Freystadt , Lower Silesia , † July 6, 1912 in Godesberg ) was a German military musician , stick trumpeter , composer and carnivalist .

Life

Fellenberg grew up as the son of a master weaver in Freystadt, Lower Silesia (today Kożuchów ). His maternal uncle, Stadtmusikus von Freystadt, encouraged him to take violin and trumpet lessons at the age of nine . He played his first solo trumpet at a concert in his hometown. At the age of 15 he took part in guest concerts in Berlin and Saint Petersburg as a soloist with bands . Fellenberg began his military service in 1866 with the Infantry Regiment "Hiller von Gärtringen" (4th Posensches) No. 59 in Glogau . There he was promoted to solo flugelhorn . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 Fellenberg took part with his military band; for his service he received the war commemorative coin with the battle clips for the battles of Weißenburg , Wörth , Sedan and Buzenval (Mont Valérien) as well as the siege of Paris . He then worked until 1877 as a cornet player in the cuirassier regiment "von Driesen" (Westphalian) No. 4 in Münster . During this time Fellenberg completed a three-year training course at the Royal University of Music in Berlin, due to which he was appointed stick trumpeter in the Uhlan regiment "von Katzler" (Silesian) No. 2 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia on August 7, 1877 . Subsequent place of employment until 1888 was Gleiwitz .

In October 1888 Fellenberg became a baton trumpeter in the cuirassier regiment "Graf Gessler" (Rheinisches) No. 8 in Cologne-Deutz . His regimental band consisted of about 25 men and took an active part in the city's social life including the Cologne Carnival , including the Rose Monday procession. In 1890 he was appointed " Royal Music Conductor ". In Cologne, like his predecessor, Fellenberg not only emerged as the director of the regimental band , but also as a composer of numerous military, carnival and handmade marches as well as Mariechen dances , songs, character pieces and waltzes. He achieved his greatest success and recognition with the cornet. In Godesberg, Fellenberg was friends with Aennchen Schumacher , a local landlady and collector of student songs, who dedicated her book on Kommers to him in 1905 . On October 31, 1906, he was adopted as a stick trumpeter in Cologne's Stapelhaus and was given the honorary name “The Trumpeter of Cologne”. Fellenberg spent his retirement in Godesberg, where he bought Brunnenallee 17 as his residence that same year . Even after his retirement he occasionally appeared in guest roles as a Piston soloist at concerts in Cologne and other cities.

Fellenberg was married to Marie Auguste Milke († 1914) since 1870. The marriage resulted in four daughters and their son Karl (* 1873), who also became a military musician and trumpeter and died at the age of 29. The resting place of Fellenberg and his family is in the castle cemetery in Bad Godesberg. He is a great-grandfather of the composer and Cologne carnivalist Toni Steingass .
