Rembert von Kerssenbrock (* 1474 at Haus Brincke near Borgholzhausen ; † February 12, 1568 at Castle Dringenberg ) was bishop of Paderborn from 1547 until his death .

Life

He came from the Westphalian noble family Kerssenbrock . The father was Johannes von Kerssenbrock from the Brinke family, the mother was Agnes, née von Adelepsen .

Kerssenbrock attended the cathedral school in Osnabrück . Then he went to Rome . In 1522 he became cathedral capitular and pastor in Osnabrück. Since 1528 he also had a cathedral canon in Paderborn and Minden . He was also canon in Münster from 1540 . Because of arguments with the evangelical preacher Dietrich Buthmann in Osnabrück, he moved to Paderborn in 1533.

In 1546 he was elected Bishop of Paderborn as the successor to the deposed Bishop Hermann von Wied . Kerssenbrock called a diocesan synod to implement the Augsburg Interim in 1548 and carried out a general visit in 1549. Outside the Hochstift Paderborn but within the Diocese of Paderborn, he could not prevent the Reformation from advancing in the counties of Lippe and Ravensberg , in Hesse and Waldeck .

Between 1548 and 1550 he had the Dringenberg Castle renewed and strengthened. In 1553 Julius von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel was placed at his side as coadjutor until he became Duke in Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. The appointment of Johann von Hoya as coadjutor failed due to the objection of Kerssenbrock and the cathedral chapter. After his death, however, Johann succeeded Kerssenbrock. Rembert von Kerssenbrock was buried in Paderborn Cathedral .
