production

Remember Me was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for Lee Unkrich's animated film Coco - Alive Than Life! wrote that as early as 2013 for her work on the song Let It Go for the Disney film The Ice Queen - Completely unabashed at the Oscar ceremony in 2014 was awarded an Oscar.

The song, whose title in the German version is Denk an mich , is considered Ernesto de la Cruz's greatest hit in the film, but was in fact composed by his colleague Hector, who turns out to be Miguel's actual great-great-grandfather. At the end of the film, Miguel sings the song for his great-grandmother Coco, who joins the song that her father once wrote for her. In the end-credits version, the song is sung by Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade . Miguel said, “The song is special because it's about family and it reminds us not to forget where we come from. It is a reminder that we must cherish the love and sacrifice of our ancestors, as it led to our being able to be who we are. I think the message of this song is strong enough to connect with everyone, but we add another layer of depth and soul to the emotion of the song in this version. ” Camilo Lara from the Mexican Institute of Sound music project supported the team as musical advisor.

According to director Lee Unkrich, the Día de los Muertos is very much about our obligation to keep the memory of the deceased alive, which also means to pass this on to the next generation.

Film and lyrics

On the Día de los Muertos in Mexico, friends and relatives come together to commemorate the loved ones who have passed away

The film is about the twelve-year-old Miguel, who lives in a Mexican village and dreams of becoming a great musician, although music has been banned in his family for generations. Like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, he wants to prove his talent. He got the opportunity to do this when, after a mysterious chain of events on the Día de los Muertos, he suddenly found himself in the land of the dead, where he met the cheerful crook Hector. Together they embark on an extraordinary journey that aims to bring to light the truth behind Miguel's family story. Miguel experiences a family reunion of a different kind and ultimately becomes a mariachi himself .

The Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that is mainly celebrated in the center and south of the country. On this day, friends and relatives come together to commemorate the loved ones who have passed away. Their favorite foods, sugar skulls and flowers are offered on altars and their spiritual journey is supported by prayers.

Depending on the tempo, the lyrics can be interpreted differently, as a farewell or love song, but also as a lullaby, as actually intended in the film. It says:

In English In the German translation
Remember me
Though I have to say goodbye
Remember me
Don't let it make you cry
For even if I'm far away
I hold you in my heart
I sing a secret song to you
Each night we are apart
Remember me
Though I have to travel far
Remember me
Each time you hear a sad guitar
Know that I'm with you
The only way that I can be
Until you're in my arms again
Remember me
Always think of me.
I unfortunately have to go now
always think of me.
Therefore don't cry tears
because then I'm far from you
I carry you in my heart.
I'll sing a little song for you
then the pain goes away.
Always think of me.
If I go away, don't be afraid
always think of me
and the guitar sounded sad.
Says that I can only be like this
with you every evening,
until you're in my arms again.
Always think of me.
