History and sights

Propsteikirche - A previous castle from the 11th century had to give way to the construction of a monastery around 1127. This was a branch establishment of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Remi in Reims in honor of St. Remigius and received - as later also the surrounding area - his name, although the saint, who in the 5th / 6th Lived in the 18th century, never visited the area. The monastery was dissolved in 1526 in the wake of the Reformation . 15 members of the House of Pfalz-Veldenz ( County of Veldenz ) are buried in the provost church.

Michelsburg - From 1260 a second castle was built near the Propstei, which was named after the patron of the castle chapel, St. Michael , and is now in ruins. The castle initially belonged to the County of Veldenz, later to the Duchy of Wittelsbach Palatinate-Zweibrücken . The facility was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and the War of the Palatinate Succession . After it was finally destroyed by French revolutionary troops in the early 1790s, it was officially released as a quarry in 1794. Renovation work was carried out in 1973/74.
