René-François Régnier

René-François Régnier (born July 17, 1794 in Saint-Quentin-lès-Beaurepaire , † January 3, 1881 in Cambrai ) was a French clergyman, Archbishop of Cambrai and cardinal .

Life

René-François Régnier studied at the Angers seminary. He was ordained a priest on December 19, 1818. In the diocese of Angers , he then worked for seven years as vicar in Beaupréau and rector of a state school. He was Honorary Canon of the Metropolitan Chapter and Vicar General of the Diocese of Angers for ten years .

For Bishop of Angoulême René-François Regnier was elected on 22 July. 1842 He was ordained bishop on September 25 of the same year in the seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris by the Archbishop of Paris , Denis Auguste Affre ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Pierre-Dominique-Marcellin Bonamie SS.CC. and François Morlot , Archbishop-elect of Tours . His motto as bishop was Charitas Christi urget nos (“The love of Christ urges us”, 2 Corinthians 5,14  EU ). René-François Régnier became Papal Assistant to the Throne on November 9, 1847 . On September 30, 1850 he was raised to Archbishop of Cambrai. He was a participant in the First Vatican Council .

Pope Pius IX created him in the consistory of December 22, 1873 as cardinal priest . The titular church Santissima Trinità al Monte Pincio received René-François Régnier on May 4, 1874, the cardinal's hat on December 31, 1877. He was a participant in the 1878 conclave , which Pope Leo XIII. chose.

René-François Régnier was buried in the Cathedral of Cambrai .
