economy

In the Middle Ages, Beaupréau was the economic center of the agricultural area. In the 1980s, business parks were designated outside the city, creating new jobs.

history

In 1998 a pre-Roman torso of a statue was accidentally discovered, which was a little too hastily referred to as Dame de Beaupréau (see web link), although it is probably a male figure. Be that as it may, the find is an indication of the long history of settlement in the area, which continued into Roman and medieval times.

During the French Revolution , the Vendée uprising took place in the area.

Attractions

Beaupréau - Notre-Dame Church
  • The first castle was built in the 1st half of the 11th century under Fulko Nerra of Anjou as part of the border fortifications to the Breton market . In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Scépeaux family who owned it in the 14th-16th centuries. In the 19th century, its heirs, the Dukes of Blacas, rebuilt it into an imposing Renaissance castle . In 1958 it was converted into a clinic which closed in 1994.
One of the first battles in the Vendée War took place here on March 13, 1793 . Cathelineau blew up a division of the National Guard and captured a cannon.
  • The Hôtel du Sénéchal dates from different construction periods (16th to 19th centuries). It was once the seat of the governor of the French king.
  • A wash house ( lavoir ) - supposedly from the 16th century - has also been preserved.
  • The façade, completed in 1863 in neo-Gothic style, and the stained glass from 1875–1895 of the Notre-Dame church have been recognized as a monument historique since 2006 . From 1875 to 1901, the artistic glazing was created by the glass painter's workshop Ely, initially in Nantes and later in Kassel-Wehlheiden.
  • A 12.5-kilometer circular hiking trail (see web link) leads to some attractions in the area.
