René Marsiglia

René Marsiglia (born September 19, 1959 in Aubagne , † September 25, 2016 in Cagnes-sur-Mer ) was a French football player and coach.

Athletic career

Marsiglia came over the amateur club SO Caillols in the summer of 1976 to the second division US Boulogne . In his second season he made the breakthrough and established himself with 31 season appearances in the team. Then the first division OSC Lille recruited him in 1978. At first he played mainly in the club's second representation, but also played a few top division games under coach José Arribas alongside Pierre Dréossi , Éric Péan , Jean-Pierre Mottet and Pierre Pleimelding . In the 1981/82 season he played in the first team and played 36 of the 38 season games. Also in the following season he was part of the team. He left the club in 1983 and joined the RC Lens . In last year's fourth of the French championship he was also a regular, after two years he went to Sporting Toulon . Under coach Rolland Courbis, he occupied places in the rear midfield with the club, before he moved again after two seasons.

Between 1987 and 1994 Marsiglia played for OGC Nice . If he missed the European Cup in the 1988/89 season with the team as sixth in the table, the club ended the following season third from bottom on the relegation place . Against Racing Strasbourg , however, succeeded in relegation. At the end of the 1990/91 season, although fourth in the table, the association withdrew the club's license due to financial irregularities. Marsiglia remained in the second division with the club, under coach Albert Emon 1994 succeeded in promotion. However, the player left the club and ended his career with second division Amiens SC .

After the end of his active career Marsiglia was initially a youth coach at Amiens SC, before he took over as head coach in autumn 1998 as the successor to Arnaud Dos Santos. By the end of the season he managed to stay up, after relegation the following year the club separated from him. First he worked again as a youth coach at Le Havre AC , in 2001 he took over as head coach of the third division AS Cannes . After a year he moved to Olympique Alès , but returned to AS Cannes in 2003 due to financial problems after the club was dissolved. In August 2004 he was released there and replaced by Gérard Bernardet.

Marsiglia returned to his longstanding play station OGC Nice in July 2005. There he initially worked as a youth coach and later as head of the youth department. In the summer of 2010, he moved up to the assistant coach of Eric Roy to look after the first division team. When he was released in November 2011, he took over the post of head coach at the relegation-threatened first division club.

He died of cancer on September 25, 2016 at the age of 57 in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
