Renaissance is the third solo album by the Swiss rapper Stress . It was released on February 16, 2007 on the Universal Music label . Renaissance was the musician's first publication to reach number one on the Swiss album charts. Overall, the album stayed in the charts for over a year and a half. When Renaissance reached platinum status with over 30,000 units sold, a new version of the album was released under the name Renaissance Platinum Edition . In addition to two additional songs, the Platinum Edition also includes a bonus DVD with recordings of live concerts and a documentary about the creation of the album.

The title Renaissance (French for: "rebirth") refers to the epoch of art and culture of the same name . With both the title and the cover, the rapper wants to refer to the fact that "old Switzerland" is dead and to take action against political conservatism .

“It means the rebirth of Switzerland. For me there is a new Switzerland. Good old Switzerland is dead. The new Switzerland is more cultural, more flexible and independent. It also means a personal rebirth, because I am also going through a new private situation. "

- Stress : about the title of his album

background

In 2005, after a year and a half of work, Stress released his second solo album, July 25th , 2003 , which stayed in the Swiss album charts for more than a year and reached number 3 as the highest place. When the sound carrier reached gold status, a special version with the title 07/25/03 Gold Edition was released.

This was followed by the breakup of the hip-hop group Double Pact , which Stress had also been a part of. The band split to support the successful solo careers of each artist. Double Pact released a best-of album called Au Revoir in 2006 before Stress began working on Renaissance . At the same time, the producers of the film Breakout asked him to turn the music into a film. For this purpose he selected songs from his two solo albums Billy Bear and 07/25/03 as well as pieces that had been created for the new album and some tracks from Double Pact. Stress and his team, consisting of the singer Karolyn, the rapper Nega and the producer Yvan Jaquemet, were under enormous time pressure, which increased when the rapper took on a dominant supporting role in the film and was therefore also busy with the shooting .

Most important songs

Corn où?

This is the second single from the album. Stress verbally attacks the right-wing populist Swiss People's Party (SVP) and its then Federal Councilor Christoph Blocher . In 2005 he released a song called F * ck Blocher and was then asked to apologize by the SVP Young Party . In Mais où he particularly addresses the SVP's voting methods (see also: Schäfchenplakat ). He is of the opinion - and wants to express this - that the SVP is manipulating the people with provocative and sometimes racist campaigns.

“The current campaign with the sheep and all the things they're doing right now really piss me off. […] The message that the SVP is spreading is unsustainable. That does nothing for this country except to want to separate us, to bring the cohesion to zero. To be honest, keep it up: "Fuck Blocher". "

- Stress : about Mais où and the SVP

The video clip for Mais où? won the Swiss Music Award in the Best Videoclip National category in 2008.

Avenues

Featuring : Karolyn. Avenues is the first single from the album and the official soundtrack for Breakout . Stress deals with the loss of a loved one, which also dominates the plot of the film. A video clip was shot for Avenues , which shows the rapper in a church and how he drives a car along a country road. In between, scenes from the film can be seen.

Avenues entered the Swiss singles charts at number 47 on January 28, 2008 and reached number 4 as the highest ranking.

Rester soi-même

In the third single from the album, the rapper calls on you to stay yourself and not to give in to external influence. The video clip was shot during live performances and in the backstage area. As with the musician's first single, Billy Bear / Ma Musique Meurt , the video combines excerpts from two songs, namely Rester soi-même and Mode de vie .

Ma Suisse

Featuring : Gimma & Baze. The song begins with a call from the rapper to an employee of the federal administration , who he asks for Christoph Blocher's cell phone number. In the actual song, Stress and the two dialect rappers Gimma and Baze make fun of the clichés of Switzerland and emphasize that "old" and conservative Switzerland is "dead". Finally, Stress calls the Bundeshaus again and asks for Christoph Mörgeli , whom he wants to give tickets for a stress concert.

On n'a qu'une terre

Location of the video clip for On n'a qu'une terre

Stress only developed and released this single after the release of Renaissance . On n'a qu'une terre (Eng .: “We only have one earth”) was created in collaboration with the retail group Coop . In the song, the rapper takes up the topics of environmental pollution , scarcity of resources and global warming . He denounces humanity, but emphasizes that he feels guilty about himself, especially towards the next generations. A video clip was also shot for the piece. To do this, the artist traveled with a film team to Kazakhstan , where they recorded the video in the drying Aral Sea , near a rusted shipwreck . According to the rapper, the fact that the desert-like filming location used to be a huge lake is intended to underline the urgency of environmental rescue. The beginning of the music video is used as a co-op advertisement.

illustration

The cover of the Standard Edition shows a night scene in a cemetery . Stress wears a black suit and sunglasses and has a bouquet of flowers in his hand. He stands in front of a tombstone with the word Suisse on it and 1291-2006 underneath . This is supposed to underline the title of the album as well as some songs like Mais où or Ma Suisse and show the conservative, original Switzerland as "dead". The album comes with a booklet which contains the lyrics to Mais où , Mélodies de nos vies , 07/20/03 , Ma Suisse and Zone as well as photos of the rapper.

The cover of the Platinum Edition only shows the rapper's face, in white and with shaded eyes and edges, on a black background. The lyrics to On n'a qu'une terre and a table of contents of the bonus DVD have been added to the booklet . The back cover has also been changed. In addition, the Platinum Edition is presented in a more elegant case.

Platinum Edition

Due to the great success of Renaissance and the singles that went with it, Stress decided to release a special version with two additional bonus tracks and a DVD , as with the previous album July 25th , 2003. In addition to the single On n'a qu'une terre , a “5 heure du matin” version of Elle & Moi was added to the track list. The instrumental line-up is identical to that of the original. The Platinum Edition received a new cover and the accompanying booklet was expanded. The bonus DVD shows the four music videos extracted from the album, as well as an eleven-minute documentary about Stress's trip to Kazakhstan and the recording of the video for On n'a qu'une terre . Another documentary lasts half an hour and shows the work on the album and the film Breakout , deals with the concerts and introduces the rapper's live band. In addition, Stress and Yvan, among others, have their say in interviews. The Platinum Edition also contains a compilation of the recordings of five major live performances.

The Platinum Edition was released on November 16, 2007.
