Renatus Hupfeld

Renatus Hupfeld (born December 3, 1879 in Schleusingen , † February 15, 1968 in Heidelberg ) was a Protestant theologian .

Live and act

Hupfeld's father was the superintendent David Hupfeld (1836–1916), his grandfather the orientalist Hermann Hupfeld . The mother was a daughter of the theologian Julius Müller . After attending school, Hupfeld studied Protestant theology in Tübingen , Halle (Saale) , Marburg and Greifswald . During his studies he became a member of the Schwarzburgbund - connections Nicaria Tübingen (1898), Tuiskonia Halle (1900) and Sedinia Greifswald (1905). In 1912 he became pastor in Barmen and in 1916 in Bonn. In 1925 he was given an extraordinary professorship in Bonn and a semester later a full professorship for practical theology at the University of Rostock . In 1942 he moved to Heidelberg University , where he retired in 1950.

In the period of upheaval at the end of 1918, Hupfeld co-founded the Rhenish regional group of the German National People's Party (DNVP). He belonged to this party until 1929, after which he was a member of the Christian People's Service and for a short time also chairman of its Mecklenburg regional association. When the People's Service supported Reich Chancellor Brüning in 1932 , he left the party again.

During the years of the church struggle , Hupfeld belonged to the Confessing Church .
