The Resolution 159 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously in the 907th meeting on 28 September 1960th She dealt with Mali's admission as a new member to the United Nations .

background

Mali was then part of French West Africa until independence . In elections in 1956, Modibo Keïta was able to win a seat in the Malian Territorial Assembly and in the French National Assembly. Keita and his party, the US-RDA, then strove for independence. On November 24, 1958, Sudan became an autonomous republic within the Communauté française . On March 25, 1959, it merged with Senegal to form the Mali Federation .

The Mali Federation became independent on June 20, 1960. On June 28, 1960, the Security Council approved the Federation's accession to the United Nations with Resolution 139 . However, the demarcation between the states was arbitrarily determined by the French colonial territory and did not adhere to traditions, peoples, grown relationships or hostilities. Accordingly, Senegal left the federation on August 20 of the same year, and the remaining part became formally independent as the Republic of Mali on September 22, 1960 .
