The Resolution 155 of the UN Security Council is a resolution that the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously in the 892nd meeting on 24 August 1960th It dealt with the admission of the Republic of Cyprus as a new member in the United Nations .

background

The British colony gained independence on August 16, 1960 on the basis of the Zurich Agreement between Great Britain , Greece and Turkey (1959); the Greek- and Turkish-speaking ethnic groups were given equal rights. Archbishop Makarios was elected as the first president . In the constitution, which was largely determined by Great Britain, the Turkish ethnic group was granted permanent representation rights.

The Security Council announced that it had examined the admission of the Republic of Cyprus as a new member of the United Nations and recommended that the UN General Assembly approve its admission.

The Republic of Cyprus joined the United Nations on September 20, 1960.
