The UN Security Council Resolution 140 is a resolution that the United Nations Security Council voted unanimously in the 870th meeting on 29 June 1960th It dealt with Madagascar's admission as a new member to the United Nations .
background
In 1947, French prestige in Madagascar fell to a low point and a national uprising was crushed after a year of bitter fighting that killed 80,000 Malagasy people. The French reformed the institutions under the loi-cadre Defferre in 1956 , and Madagascar embarked on a peaceful path to independence. The Republic of Madagascar was declared an autonomous state within the French community on October 14, 1958 . The provisional government ended in 1959 with the adoption of a constitution; full independence was achieved on June 26, 1960 with Philibert Tsiranana as president.

The Security Council announced that it had examined Madagascar's admission as a new member of the United Nations and recommended that the UN General Assembly approve admission.
