To this day, this type of ship is essential, as the locks of tributaries to the Rhine or Danube (e.g. the Neckar ) are designed for a maximum of ships of the "large Rhine ship" type.
Closely based on the specification of the Great Rhine Ship, that of the large motor goods ship (GMS), which, however, may only have a draft of up to 2.8 m. Large Rhine ships that comply with this restriction meet the specification of the GMS and can therefore navigate all inland waterways of category V or higher.
The specification of the large Rhine ship was also based on that of the Rhine-See ship .
