Rhinephyllum is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words “ρίνη” (rhine) for “file” and for “φύλλον” (phyllon) for “leaf” and refers to the rough surface of the leaves.
description
The plants of the genus Rhinephyllum grow compact to mat-shaped. The triangular to hood-shaped or club-shaped leaves with convex sides usually have pairs of leaves of different sizes. Your epidermis is covered with numerous small, raised, mostly white points. These are formed by elevations above the tannin-containing idioblasts located under the hypodermis . The outer epidermis wall contains a very thick layer of crystal sand .
The individual, bractless flowers open in the late afternoon or evening. Their petals are yellow. There are five separate nectaries .
The five-compartment capsule fruits stand on long stems. They are funnel-shaped at the base and flat at the top. Their diameter is 3 to 7 millimeters.
Systematics and distribution
The distribution area of the genus Rhinephyllum extends in South Africa from Laingsburg in the Western Cape Province to Victoria West in the Northern Cape Province and extends from Jansenville in the Eastern Cape Province to the south of the Free State Province . The plants usually grow on plains in slate, sandstone or quartzite .
The first description was published in 1927 by Nicholas Edward Brown . The holotype is Rhinephyllum muirii . According to Heidrun Hartmann (* 1942) the genus Rhinephyllum includes the following species:
