Appearance and foliage leaf

Rhododendron auriculatum grows as an evergreen shrub or small tree that can reach heights of 5 to 10 meters. The bark is grayish. The bark of young twigs is hairy with dense glands and bristles ( indument ), while older branches are bare. In the elongated, conical leaf buds with a length of 3.5 to 5.5 centimeters, the outer bud scales are narrow at a length of about 3.5 centimeters with a pointed upper end and bare.

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The thickly hairy ( trichomes ), strong petiole is 1.8 to 3 centimeters long. The simple, leathery leaf blade is with a length of 9 to 12 centimeters and a width of 3 to 6.5 centimeters oblong-elliptical, oblong-lanceolate or inverted-lanceolate with a rounded or hollowed, uneven blade base and blunt, sharply pointed upper end. The cartilaginous leaf margin is glandular-ciliate. The upper side of the leaf is bare and green and the pale green underside of the leaf is covered with shaggy trichomes with glandular tips, especially along the midrib and main nerves. There are 10 to 11 lateral nerves on each side of the central rib, which is raised on the underside of the leaf and sunken on the upper side .

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period extends from July to August. The terminal, loose, umbelliferous inflorescence has a 2 to 3 centimeter long, glandular hairy rachis and contains 7 to 15 flowers. The densely hairy flower stalk is 2 to 3 centimeters long.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and seven-fold with a double flower envelope . The membranous sepals are fused into a relatively short, wavy calyx with a length of 2 to 4 millimeters. The seven 6 to 10 centimeters long petals are fused together in a funnel shape and have glandular hair on the inside. The fragrant petals are white, cream to pink in color. The 14 to 16 stamens are usually 2.5 to 3.4, rarely up to 4 inches long. The slender stamens are bare. The egg-shaped with a length of about 6 millimeters, achtkammerige ovary is dense glandular hairs and eight-times ranging. The strong, bald stylus is about 3 centimeters long and glandular towards the top.

fruit

The cylindrical capsule fruits, which are curved 3 to 4 centimeters in length when ripe, are clearly ribbed. The fruits ripen from September to October.

Occurrence

The natural range of Rhododendron auriculatum only includes the Chinese provinces of northern Guizhou , western Hubei , southern Shaanxi and eastern Sichuan .

Rhododendron auriculatum thrives in forests, in valleys and on mountain slopes at altitudes of 600 to 2000 meters.

Systematics

The first description of Rhododendron auriculatum was in 1889 by William Botting Hemsley in Francis Blackwell Forbes and William Botting Hemsley: Journal of the Linnean Society, Botany , Volume 26 (173), page 20. The specific epithet auriculatum means eared and refers to the eared spade base. The type material was collected by Augustine Henry in the Patungt district in the Chinese province of Hubei and deposited with the collective numbers A. Henry 513 and 5029 in the herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew.

Rhododendron auriculatum belongs to the subsection Auriculata in the subgenus Hymenanthes within the genus Rhododendron .
