Appearance and foliage leaf

Rhododendron racemosum grows as an evergreen, richly branched, small shrub that can reach heights of 0.15 to 2 meters. The short, thin twigs initially have a brown, glandular, scaly and later bald to somewhat velvety hairy ( indument ) bark .

The alternate leaves arranged on the branches are divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The scaly petiole is relatively short with a length of 2 to 4 millimeters. The simple and fragrant leaf blade is elongated to elliptical with a length of 1.5 to 4 centimeters and a width of 0.8 to 1.8 centimeters with a rounded or wedge-shaped blade base and a pointed or blunt upper end, which can be pointed. The edge of the spread is rolled down. The upper side of the leaf is densely covered with brown scales and the gray-white underside of the leaf is not continuously covered with medium-sized brown scales that are less than their diameter apart.

Inflorescence and flower

The flowering period in China extends from March to May. The lateral or almost terminal inflorescence contains only two or three flowers. The many roof-tile-like overlapping bud scales are durable and present during the anthesis . The dense, scaly, thin flower stalk is 0.5 to 1 centimeter long.

The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five scaled sepals are fused into a disc-shaped calyx with only tiny calyx teeth. The five 0.9 to 1.4 centimeters long petals are fused broadly funnel-shaped with five spreading corolla lobes at most up to half their length. The petals are pink to purple and their outside is sparsely scaled. The ten free, fertile stamens tower above the corolla. The stamens are finely haired at their base. The five-chamber ovary is densely covered with scales. The upright, hairless or finely hairy at the base stylus is longer than the stamens.

Fruit and seeds

The scaly capsule fruits are cylindrical with a length of 0.5 to 1 centimeter when ripe. The tiny seeds are wingless.

Occurrence

The natural range of Rhododendron racemosum includes the southern Chinese provinces of northwest Guizhou , southwest Sichuan and Yunnan .

Rhododendron racemosum thrives, mostly dominant, in oak or pine forests , as well as the edges of fir forests and grasslands at altitudes of mostly 1500 to 3500, rarely up to 3800 meters.

Systematics

The first description of Rhododendron racemosum was in 1886 by Adrien René Franchet in Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France , Volume 33, page 235. Synonyms for Rhododendron racemosum Franch. are Rhododendron crenatum H.Lév. and Rhododendron motsouense H.Lév. The type material with the collective number Delavay 299 was collected by Pierre Jean Marie Delavay on Mount Tsang-chan.

Rhododendron racemosum belongs to the subsection Rhodobotrys in the subgenus Pseudorhodorastrum within the genus Rhododendron .

In 1980 James Culler had the Rhododendron × fittianum Balf described from Yunnan . f. regarded as a hybrid of Rhododendron racemosum .
