Pierre Jean Marie Delavay

Pierre Jean Marie Delavay (born December 28, 1834 in Les Gets , † December 31, 1895 in Yunnan-fu in China ) was a French Jesuit , missionary , explorer and botanist who worked in the Chinese Empire . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Delavay ".

Live and act

Delavay was a Jesuit . He was sent in 1867 to China, where he first in the province of Guangdong worked. He later moved to Kunming , Yunnan , where he stayed until his death. In addition to his work as a missionary, he was an avid collector of plants . At the time of its graduation, its collection comprised over 200,000 individual plants. Delavay sent his herbarium to Paris to the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle , where it was edited by Adrien René Franchet . With the help of the collection, he was able to first describe over 1500 new species . First the Plantae Davidianae appeared in two volumes in 1883 and 1889 with very beautiful illustrations, then from 1889 to 1890 the Plantae Delavayanae appeared in three parts.

Dedication names

The plant genus Delavaya in the family of the soap tree plants (Sapindaceae) was named in his honor.

In addition, the epithet of several plant species are named after him: Delavay's privet ( Ligustrum delavayanum ), Delavay's fir ( Abies delavayi ), the magnolia species Magnolia delavayi , Incarvillea delavayi , Thalictrum delavayi , a meadow rue and Delavay's peony ( Paeonia ).
