The Rhone nerd ( Zingel asper ), called Apron or Roi du Doubs in Switzerland , is a fish from the family of the real perch (Percidae).

description

The 15 to 22 centimeters long fish, like all spindle bass, has a slender, spindle-shaped body. The mouth is below, the tail stalk shorter than that of the nerd who is close to it . The light brown to gray color shows three irregular dark bands on the back of the body. The belly is white in color.

Occurrence

The occurrence is limited to the French and Swiss Rhone basins. The distribution area of less than 10 km² consists of four unconnected areas: Only a few specimens live in the Drôme , in the Durance there are around 200 and in the Beaume around 80. In 2012, a census showed in the upper part of the Doubs for the stock in Switzerland only 52 copies.

The species is declining in its already low population as a result of water pollution and water withdrawal. The IUCN classified them in 1990 and 1994 as "Endangered" (critically endangered) and in 1996 as "Critically Endangered" (critically endangered). The Swiss Fisheries Association (SFV) has declared the Rhône nerdy fish of the year 2013 to draw the public's attention to the threatened extinction of the species.

Way of life

The Rhône nerd, lazy by day, is active at night. It lives on the bottom in water with a depth of 30 to 80 centimeters with a moderate current and feeds on soil animals of all kinds. Spawning time is from March to April. The short-lived species reaches an age of around 3.5 years.
