history

Numerous archaeological finds prove a prehistoric human presence. The name of the place goes back to a rock formation above the Rio Vouga , which was religiously venerated during the times of the Castro culture and the pre-Christian Roman occupation. From this the medieval place name Ribeira de Io developed (from Latin: idolum , German: idol), under which the place was noted in the royal surveys of 1258 . The current form of the name developed from this over time.

Attractions

The various architectural monuments of the municipality include a group of water mills, and historical public buildings such as schools and religious buildings , including the parish church Igreja Matriz de Ribeiradio (also Igreja de São Miguel Arcanjo ).
