Riccardo Predelli

Riccardo Predelli (born May 19, 1840 in Rovereto , † March 1, 1909 in Venice ) was an Italian historian and archivist. He achieved great merit by organizing and cataloging the rich holdings of the Venetian State Archives , as well as by publishing important holdings.

Predelli attended high school in Trento . He rejected the clerical career envisaged by his parents and preferred to go to Venice for political reasons. He was a supporter of irredentism , a movement aimed at the unification of Italy. From 1864 he worked in the Du Bois Bank (which existed until 2013). He owed the move to the Venice State Archives in 1868 - two years after the annexation of Veneto to Italy - to the influence of Tomaso Gar, who also came from Rovereto . In 1877 he was entrusted with teaching palaeography and diplomacy by the State Archives . From 1897 he was co-director of the specialist journal Nuovo Archivio Veneto .
