Richard Andersson (pianist)

Ernst Christian Richard Andersson (born August 22, 1851 in Stockholm ; † May 20, 1918 there ) was a Swedish composer , pianist and music teacher .

Andersson took violin and piano lessons in his youth. From 1867 to 1874 he studied piano with Jan van Boom , harmony with OD Winge , organ playing with Gustaf Adolf Mankell , composition with Hermann Berens and violin with Adolf Fredrik Lindroth at the Stockholm Conservatory . He then took further piano lessons from Hilda Thegerström . From 1876 to 1877 he studied piano with Clara Schumann and composition with Richard Wüerst in Berlin . From 1877 to 1884 he was a student at the Berlin Music Academy , where his teachers were Karl Heinrich Barth (piano) and Friedrich Kiel (counterpoint).

In 1866 he founded a music school in Stockholm, which last had branches in Uppsala, Djursholm, Saltsjöbaden and Enskede and employed 56 teachers, and which he directed until his death. Among the graduates of this school were Vilhelm Stenhammar , Knut Bäck , John G. Jacobsson , Adolf Wiklund , Astrid Berwald , Manolita d'Anduaga and Kerstin Runbäck . From 1904 to 1906 he also taught piano at the Stockholm Conservatory. As a composer, Andersson was best known for songs (including texts by Heinrich Heine , Ludwig Uhland , Emanuel Geibel , Björnsterne Björnson ), piano pieces and chamber music works.
