Richard Brinkmann (born June 16, 1921 in Elberfeld , today Wuppertal , † November 2, 2002 in Tübingen ) was a German specialist in German .

Life

Richard Brinkmann, born in Elberfeld, devoted himself to studying art history , classical philology , philosophy and theology after graduating from high school until he was drafted as a soldier for military service in World War II , where he was seriously wounded on the Russian front - he suffered fractured his skull and lost his right arm. After his recovery he resumed his studies, but soon switched to studying German.

In 1948 Brinkmann received his doctorate as Dr. phil. In 1955 he completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen . There he took over the professorship for modern German literary studies in 1958 , which he held until his retirement in 1986. In addition, Brinkmann taught for many years as a professor at the University of California at Berkeley and repeatedly as a visiting professor at other American and New Zealand universities. From 1956 until his death he was co-editor of the German quarterly journal for literary studies and intellectual history .

He was a member of the Austrian and Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , Chairman of the German Studies Commission of the DFG, Vice-President of the International Association of Germanists and a member of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's selection committee . Richard Brinkmann made valuable contributions to the study of early romanticism and the literature of German realism .
