Richard Fischer

Richard Fischer (born April 3, 1855 in Kaufbeuren , † September 21, 1926 in Berlin ) was a German SPD politician .

Life and work

Memorial plaque on Fischer's birthplace in Kaufbeuren. The first memorial plaque there was removed by the National Socialists in 1933. The current memorial plaque was put up by the local SPD in the 150th year of his birth.

After attending school, Fischer completed an apprenticeship as a typesetter . He first worked in Switzerland and joined social democracy here in 1873. After his return to Germany he became editor of the newspaper Volkswille in Augsburg in 1876 , before he joined the Berlin Free Press in 1878 . In 1879 he served a seven-month sentence in Plötzensee prison for violating the press law and, after serving, was expelled from Berlin on the basis of the Socialist Act. He first went back to Switzerland, where he lived in Zurich until 1888 and worked as a butcher for the German-language newspaper Der Sozialdemokrat . After his expulsion from Switzerland, he continued to work in London for the illegal newspaper of the Social Democrats. After his return to Germany in 1890, he became the first full-time party secretary of the SPD and took over the management of the Vorwärts bookstore from 1893 to 1902 to 1922 . With the establishment of the publishing house "Vorwärts" bookstore and publishing house Paul Singer Co. Berlin in 1902 he was its managing director until 1922.

Fischer was buried in the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery in Berlin. His grave is now in the Socialist Memorial in this cemetery. His wife Juliane (1857–1941) was also dug here.

Political party

Fischer joined the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland in 1873 and switched to the SPD in 1876. From 1890 to 1913 and from 1917 to 1925 he took part in all party conventions. Since the beginning of the 20th century he was a member of the SPD party executive.

MP

From 1893 to 1918 Fischer was a member of the Reichstag for the constituency of Berlin 2. From 1910 to 1918 he held the office of secretary. In 1919/20 he was a member of the Weimar National Assembly . He was then a member of the Reichstag until May 1924 and again from the December 1924 elections until his death .
