Richard Gerard Lennon (born March 26, 1947 in Arlington - † October 29, 2019 ) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Cleveland .

Life

The Archbishop of Boston , Cardinal Humberto Sousa Medeiros , ordained him a priest on May 19, 1973 .

Pope John Paul II named him auxiliary bishop in Boston and titular bishop of Sufes on June 29, 2001 . The Archbishop of Boston, Bernard Francis Cardinal Law , donated him episcopal ordination on September 14 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were William Francis Murphy , Bishop of Rockville Center , and Lawrence Joseph Riley , Auxiliary Bishop of Boston.

After the resignation of Cardinal Laws on December 13, 2002, he was Apostolic Administrator of Boston until the appointment of the new Archbishop Seán Patrick O'Malley on July 1, 2003 .

On April 4, 2006 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. was appointed Bishop of Cleveland and inducted into office on May 15 of that year.

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on December 28, 2016 for health reasons.
