Richard Klemens von Metternich

Richard Klemens Prince of Metternich-Winneburg (born January 7, 1829 in Vienna ; † March 1, 1895 ibid) was an Austrian diplomat from the von Metternich family .

biography

Metternich was the son of the Austrian State Chancellor Klemens Wenzel Prince von Metternich and Marie Antonia Freiin von Leykam . In 1856 he married his niece Pauline Countess Sándor , daughter of his half-sister Léontine von Metternich.

In 1855 he became secretary of the legation at the Austrian embassy in Paris, and in 1856 Austrian envoy and plenipotentiary minister at the Saxon court in Dresden. In 1861 became a hereditary member of the manor house of the Austrian Imperial Council .

From November 14, 1859 to December 13, 1871 Metternich was ambassador in Paris, where he was at the court of Napoleon III. played an important role in society with his wife Pauline. There he tried in vain to draw France to Austria's side in the German War .

He was committed to the establishment of the First International Art Exhibition in Vienna .

In retirement he gave up his father's estate.

Richard and Pauline von Metternich had three children:

  • Sophie Princess von Metternich-Winneburg (1857–1941)
  • Antoinette Pascalina Countess Metternich Sándor-von Winneburg (1862–1890)
  • Klementina Marie Countess Metternich Sándor-von Winneburg (1870–1963)

Since he had no sons from his marriage, the title of prince passed to his half-brother Paul von Metternich after his death.
