Richard Gerald Lyon-Dalberg-Acton, 4th Baron Acton (born July 30, 1941 in Aldenham Park , Hertfordshire , † October 10, 2010 in Cedar Rapids , Iowa ) was a British peer and politician of the Labor Party .

life and career

Lyon-Dalberg-Acton came from a British aristocratic Catholic family and was born in the family seat of Aldenham Park. He was the eldest son of John Lyon-Dalberg-Acton, 3rd Baron Acton and his wife Daphne, a daughter of Robert Strutt . He attended St. George's College in Salisbury, Rhodesia , now Harare , Zimbabwe . He then studied Modern History ( Modern History ) at Trinity College of the University of Oxford , which he in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts graduated. In 1988 he also obtained a Master of Arts there .

From 1964 to 1966 he was a manager at Amalgamated Packaging Industries Ltd. active in Rhodesia. From 1971 to 1974 he was director of the private bank Coutts . In 1976 he was, according to a legal education at the British barrister, politician and writer Peter Rawlinson , as a lawyer at the London Bar Association Inner Temple permitted and practiced four years from 1977 to 1981 as a Barrister . From 1981 to 1985 he worked as a legal advisor in the Ministry of Justice of Zimbabwe ( Senior Law Officer of the Ministry of Justice , Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of Zimbabwe ). In 1989, Lyon-Dalberg-Acton inherited his father's title on the death of his father and took on tasks in the parliamentary committees of the House of Lords . He also inherited the title of Baronet of Aldenham .

Acton has been the patron of Mind Jubilee Appeal since 1996 and of the Mulberry Bush School since 1998 . Since 2002 he has been the patron of the Apex Trust , before that he had been deputy patron ( Vice-Patron ) there since 1995 . He was also a patron of Frank Longford Trust since 2002 and the Hansard Society since 2003. The Old Creamery Theater Company Iowa he was since 1995 member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ). From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the Board of Directors ( Court ) of Oxford Brookes University . Since 1999 he has served on the Library Advisory Committee of the State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI). Since 2006 he has been Honorary President of the Association of American Study Abroad Programs UK . From 1980 to 1994 he was also sponsor ( sponsor ) of the British Defense and Aid Fund for Southern Africa .

He was also active as a writer and contributed to anthologies and magazines. He was an honorary citizen of Iowa .

Membership in the House of Lords

Acton was a member of the House of Lords from January 23, 1989 . With the death of his father, he had inherited his title and seat. He delivered his inaugural address on February 18, 1991. From 1998 to 1999 he was a member of the House of Lords Refreshment Committee and from 2001 to 2005 a member of the Select Committee on the Constitution . From 2002 to 2005 and from 2006 he was a member of the Joint Select Committee for Consolidation Bills . From 2006 to 2007 he was a member of the Select Committee on Delegated Policy and Regulatory Reform . Through the House of Lords Act 1999 , the majority of hereditary peers lost their seat. Lyon-Dalberg-Acton, however, received a life peerage as Baron Acton of Bridgnorth, of Aldenham in the County of Shropshire , so that he could continue his work in the relevant bodies . He last spoke up there on March 16, 2010. He last took part in a vote on March 22, 2010.

Family and death

On August 28, 1965, he married Hilary Juliet Sarah Cookson. With her he had a son, John Lyon-Dalberg-Acton . She died on October 25, 1973. Acton married Judith Garfield Todd, the daughter of Garfield Todd , in 1974 . They divorced in 1987.

Lyon-Dalberg-Acton married Patricia Nassif in 1988 , who is a professor at the University of Iowa College of Law in Iowa City . The couple had residences in London and Cedar Rapids , Iowa. They stayed married until his death. The title passed to his son on his death.

He died on October 10, 2010 at the age of 69 as a result of cancer .
