Sir Richard Pole (* 1462 ; † 1505 ) was an English knight of Welsh descent who supported the English King Henry VII and was very close. He was made Knight of the Order of the Garter and married to Margaret Plantagenet , a member of the Plantagenet dynasty. This marriage strengthened the alliance between House York and House Lancaster to form House Tudor .

family

He was the descendant of an ancient Welsh family and belonged to the Landed Gentry of Buckinghamshire . He was the son of Geoffrey Pole, Esquire, (1431-1474) who owned the Worrell estates in Cheshire and Wythurn near Medmenham in Buckinghamshire. His mother was Edith St John, the daughter of Sir Oliver St John, of Bletso in Bedfordshire, and the half-sister of Lady Margaret Beaufort , the mother of Henry VII. Thus Richard was a first cousin of the King of England. He was also the first cousin of Alice St John, wife of Henry Parker. Their daughter was Jane Parker , who in turn married George Boleyn , the brother of Anne Boleyn .

Life during the reign of Henry VII.

King Henry VII took Richard Pole as a squire into his bodyguard, probably made him a knight bachelor in August 1487 and gave him many fiefs in Wales . In 1495 he also raised men against the Perkin Warbeck rebellion .

Sir Richard Pole was "a brave and experienced commander". First he served Heinrich in the Scottish wars in 1497. He was given 200 archers and five half-lancers, shortly afterwards 600 men-in-arms, 60 half-lancers and 540 archers.

The king later appointed him steward of his eldest son and heir, Arthur Tudor . On April 23, 1499 he was accepted as a Knight Companion in the Order of the Garter. After Arthur Tudor married Catherine of Aragon in 1501, he accompanied the couple to Ludlow Castle , the seat of the Prince of Wales , who Arthur was after all. He was later given responsibility for the Welsh marches. He also had the daunting task of consulting the Welsh board of directors on how to inform the king of the death of his most beloved and eldest son on April 2, 1502.

Marriage and offspring

He married Margaret Plantagenet, daughter of George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence and Isabella Neville between 1491 and 1494. William Shakespeare wrote that Margaret was found in the marriage. Horace Walpole wrote "She married Heinrich to the eminent Sir Richard Pole, who is called the Welsh Prince". Probably he was chosen for Margaret because the king trusted him and was related to him himself. It was important to marry the Plantagenet daughter to a loyal husband, as there were repeated uprisings that wanted the White Rose (House of York) back in power. With Margaret he had five children:

He died before December 18, 1505
