Richard Sachs (painter, 1875)
Richard Sachs (born January 9, 1875 in Plauen , Kingdom of Saxony , German Empire ; † December 4, 1946 in the special camp Jamlitz , Soviet occupation zone ) was a German landscape painter and pattern designer.
life and work
Sachs attended the Royal Industrial School in Plauen until 1892 . This was followed by a period of hiking through Bavaria and Tyrol, during which he also worked for a time as a monastery painter in Trento . From 1905 he worked as a freelancer in a model drawing studio he founded in Jocketa (today part of the municipality of Pöhl ) 7 km northeast of Plauen . From his sons Adolf, Hans (1904–1944) and Horst (1919–1941), Hans - as a student at the Plauen art school and his father - also worked as a painter until his death in war. Sachs was a member of the Vogtland painter group and temporarily worked as a teacher at the Plauen art and trade school .
His artistic legacy consists mainly of minimally impasto , impressionist landscape painting with motifs from his immediate Vogtland homeland, which - because of the Pöhl dam construction from 1958 to 1964 - also contain many long-lost views. Because of his political stance, Sachs was interned in Bautzen from 1945 to 1946 , before he fell victim to the inhumane prison conditions there after being transferred to the Jamlitz special camp , also due to his advanced age. Richard-Sachs-Strasse was named after him in his home town of Pöhl.
