Josef Richard Zentgraf (born May 3, 1881 in Eichenzell ; † May 7, 1936 there ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and rector of the Latin school in Bad Orb . He wrote three books about Bad Orb and its history. His most important places of activity were Amöneburg and Bad Orb.

Life

Richard Zentgraf was born on May 3, 1881 in Eichenzell, in the school house. His parents were Ferdinand Zentgraf (* June 18, 1856 in Thaiden ) and Theresia Buch (* July 20, 1857 in Eichenzell, † June 19, 1897 in Eichenzell). He grew up with 8 younger siblings; the sister Paula Justina (born December 31, 1890) was later his housekeeper. After studying theology in Fulda, Richard Zentgraf was ordained a priest on June 29, 1906 in the Michaelskirche in Fulda. Various activities then took him to Geisa, Amöneburg and Bad Orb and the surrounding area.

Bad health forced him to retire on April 1, 1929. He returned to his parents' house in Eichenzell. There he worked for the parish for a few years. He died on May 7, 1936.

Act

After his ordination, Richard Zentgraf worked as a chaplain and Latin school teacher in Geisa . This was followed by four years as chaplain and director of the Latin school in Amöneburg. His successful activity in the school service prompted the episcopal authority to classify him for the higher school service. His appointment to Bad Orb on March 27, 1914, was linked to the condition "to take the rector's examination within a short period of time". On April 15, 1914, Zentgraf took up the post of rector at the Latin school in Bad Orb.

The following 15 years of his time in Bad Orb were characterized by enormous intensity. Until the end of the First World War, he was in charge of the military training area at the Wegscheide as a chaplain . After the First World War, he worked in pastoral care with the resettlers in Villbach and Lettgenbrunn as well as with many people in the city of Bad Orb.

Thanks to his great commitment as a teacher and headmaster, Richard Zentgraf achieved in 1920 that a secondary school was set up in his Latin school, which was initially episcopal but at that time was already a municipal school in Bad Orb . It was an important step towards the district secondary school in Bad Orb today.

In addition to his professional work, Zentgraf also studied philosophy and music. Together with Georg Wilhelm Henkel and Albert Jung , he played a key role in the cultural life of the still young spa town of Bad Orb in the 1920s. The draftsman and book artist Melchior Lechter , who stayed in Bad Orb almost every year from 1912 to 1923 for a long period of time, including from 1912 to 1920 with Richard Zentgraf in the Villa Saline, added to the cultural trio.

Richard Zentgraf's last three years in Bad Orb, 1927 to 1929, were significant for Bad Orb. In each of these years he wrote a book about the history of Bad Orb, about its surroundings, the Spessart and about Alt-Orb and its church.

His retirement years in Eichenzell must have been just as filled as his Orber years. During this time the organ in the nearby Fulda Cathedral was rebuilt and enlarged. Richard Zentgraf accompanied and commented on this process for the professionally interested audience in “Musica Sacra” with great expertise .

Honourings and prices

On January 30, 1929, Zentgraf was made an honorary citizen of the city because of his services to the city of Bad Orb .

reception

A good 25 years after the first history of the town and Saline Orb , by Johann Büttel, Zentgraf's books about Bad Orb found a very interested readership among locals and visitors to Orbs, the spa guests. Thanks to the lively "... narrative style, as well as many own and quoted poems and songs", "... Zentgraf's books were an entertaining reading".
