Richard received his first artistic training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden with Ludwig Richter and, from 1838, continued his artistic training in painting and drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , where he was tutored by his eldest brother.

At first Richard was a history painter, but also turned to landscape painting, following the example of his brothers. In terms of style, it can be assigned to the late Biedermeier period. At the beginning of the 1840s he spent the summer months mainly in Eberfing near Weilheim and on the Ammersee . There are subjects from the landscape around Rosenheim , Chiemgau and Munich. The landscape painter Alfred Metzener was a private student of Zimmermann .
