Wilhelm Alfred Metzener (born December 7, 1833 in Niendorf ad St. , † January 10, 1905 in Zweisimmen , Canton of Bern ) was a German landscape painter and illustrator .

Metzener was a son of the landlord Wilhelm Metzener (1794–1871) on Niendorf an der Stecknitz and his wife Johanne Henriette, née Anderson (1801–1859). He studied architecture, first in Hanover , from 1855 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . In 1857 he switched to painting and became a private student of the Munich landscape painter Richard Zimmermann . From 1862 to 1864 he studied at the art academy in Berlin . He lived in Italy until 1866 or 1867 . In the summer of 1865 in Olevano he met the archaeologists Richard Schöne , Reinhard Kekulé , Otto Benndorf and the painter Friedrich Preller the Younger . Heinrich Dreber was one of his companions in Rome and was the one who had the greatest influence on his art. In 1866 he traveled to Sicily . Then he settled in Düsseldorf . There he became a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In 1879 he married the Düsseldorf hotelier's daughter Clara Hubertine Klein. The couple lived in Düsseldorf- Pempelfort , Kapellstrasse 4. A private student of Metzener's was the painter Adolf Eduard Storck .

Works

Metzener's main subjects were mountain and lake landscapes from Italy, Upper Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland. He has exhibited many times since the 1870s. In 1870 Georg von Hertling (later Chancellor) published the book Sicilien under the pseudonym GF von Hoffweiler . Descriptions of the present and the past . Metzener supplied 36 woodcuts for this book, which were made by Richard Brend'amour in Düsseldorf. Metzener also worked as an illustrator for the magazine Die Gartenlaube . Metzener's oil painting Castello di Tenno near Riva , which was acquired by the Berlin National Gallery at the Berlin Academy Exhibition in 1876 and was last loaned to Arthur Greiser , the Reich Governor of the Reichsgau Wartheland in Posen , has been missing since 1945.
