Richard Schnitzler , von Schnitzler since 1913 (born April 30, 1855 in Cologne ; † November 10, 1938 there ) was a German banker , industrialist and patron .

Life

Richard Schnitzler was the son of the Cologne banker Eduard Schnitzler (junior) and his wife Maria vom Rath (1831–91). He studied after school in Cologne at the universities of Bonn , Berlin and Goettingen jurisprudence . In Bonn he was a member of the Corps Palatia and in Göttingen he was a member of the Hannovera . He completed his studies with a doctorate to become a Dr. iur. from.

After training as a banker in Berlin and London, he joined the JH Stein bank in Cologne and, like his father, became their partner in 1881. In September 1913, he and his brothers Julius Eduard and Paul were raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility. He was the Secret Commerce Councilor and Consul General of the Kingdom of Sweden . Schnitzler married Melanie Stein on September 12, 1881, the daughter of Carl Martin Stein, who was born on September 5, 1858. She died on January 19, 1884, after giving birth to a daughter Mella (Melanie) on December 29, 1883. His second wife was Ottilia Henriette Josephine Mumm von Schwarzenstein. She was a daughter of the industrialist and wine wholesaler Christian Mumm von Schwarzenstein (1832–1906) and a descendant of the founder of the Eau de Cologne factory “ Farina opposite ”. As a patron, Schnitzler chaired the Cologne Art Association and the Friends of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne for many years. From 1916 to 1921 he was a member of the Senate of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society .

Richard von Schnitzler and his nephew Georg von Schnitzler played a key role in the merger of IG Farben ; he was a member of the company's supervisory board , and Georg von Schnitzler moved from the board of directors of Hoechst AG to the board of IG Farben as commercial director in the course of the merger .

Richard von Schnitzler's daughter Ottilie Marie Edith (1892–1951) was married to Kurt Freiherr von Schröder .
