The Rietschebach , rarely Ritzebach , also incorrectly called Rutschebach , is a 5 km long tributary of the Mandau on the left in the municipality of Mittelherwigsdorf in the district of Görlitz in southeast Saxony .

description

The brook rises at the southern foot of the horse mountain (406 m above sea level) in the upper village of Oberherwigsdorf . The village of Oberherwigsdorf stretches for one and a half kilometers along its south-facing upper course. On its middle course, the Rietschebach meanders through Mittelherwigsdorf in a south-westerly direction. At the level of Mittelherwigsdorf Church, the stream turns to the west and is bridged by Bundesstraße 96 . At the lower end of Mittelherwigsdorf, the Rietschebach flows into the Mandau opposite the Scheibeberg south of the Mandau Bridge to Scheibe .

The Rietschebach has no tributaries worth mentioning. On its entire course it runs through a gentle hollow, which has been completely populated with two forest hoof villages since the Middle Ages . That is why the stream is expanded and set in high natural stone walls, and numerous bridges and footbridges cross it.

Origin of name

The name of the stream is of Slavic origin and derives from rečica (small stream).

Flood

The stream burst its banks several times in heavy rain. The Chronica Herwigsdorff reports on hailstorms and torrential rain on June 15 and 16, 1725, as a result of which the Ritschebach poured cruelly, as did the Mandau . The August floods of 2010 caused severe damage. By 2016, three houses between the stream and the street had been demolished, the renewal of the collapsed retaining walls has not yet been completed (as of summer 2016).
